Two Israelis killed
in terrorist attack near Jerusalem.
On Saturday, two Israelis were
killed as they guarded the construction site of the security
fence. Gunmen opened fire from a car at a nearby wadi.
The "Jenin Martyrs Brigades," affiliated with Yasser Arafat's
Fatah, claimed responsibility for the attack. More
Palestinian attempts
to stab Jewish worshippers outside Western Wall. A
young Palestinian attempted to stab Jewish worshippers at
the entrance to the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem's Old
City on Tuesday. He was overpowered and arrested by
security forces. More
New rockets threaten
Israel. Both Iran and Hamas have
developed rockets with a range long enough to hit Israel.
Iran's rockets can be shipped from Tehran to southern Lebanon
in order to be used by Hizbullah, while Hamas has a new
Qassam rocket which can penetrate Israel's coastline.

14 foiled suicide
bombings in the past 6 weeks. On
Sunday, the Israeli Security Agency Chief told the cabinet
that 14 suicide bombings had been thwarted in the past 6
weeks, and that the number of terror alerts had increased
from 30 to 50 per day. Two bombers blew themselves
up near Israeli targets but did not cause injuries, and
the rest were prevented through initiated Israeli military
actions, roadblocks and random patrols. The Security
Agency Chief commented on the recent quiet in Israel, saying
that it was a result of Israeli preventive actions.

US Secretary
of State Powell Optimistic about Peace
In an interview with
the German weekly Die Zeit on Wednesday, US Secretary
of State Colin Powell expressed optimism about renewed movement
toward peace in the Middle East. Powell said that
he was encouraged by the recent comments of Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, who said last week that he was planning
a series of "unilateral" steps if peace talks broke down.
Secretary of State Powell stressed that the new Palestinian
government must first take action against Palestinian terrorists.

Iran's
Nuclear Program Poses Largest Threat to Israel
This week, Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon announced his intentions to spearhead Israel's
efforts to thwart Iran's nuclear aspirations. He asked
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom to speak with world leaders
about the threat that Iran poses, and he asked the Mossad
to be responsible for the necessary day-to-day activities
involved. Mossad head Meir Dagan told a parliamentary
committee that the Iranian nuclear program is the greatest
threat that Israel has ever faced. Earlier this month,
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told officials that
Iran's nuclear weapons program would be impossible to stop
by the end of 2004, and that it would be producing weapons
within the next three years. More
Iraqi Infant
Undergoes Heart Surgery in Israel
On Wednesday, a week-old
baby from Iraq underwent heart surgery at the Wolfson Medical
Center in Holon, Israel. She arrived in Israel on
Tuesday for an emergency heart operation after she was refused
treatment by European hospitals. The Israeli humanitarian
organization Save A Child's Heart organized the trip; it
became involved after an American doctor working with US
forces in Iraq discovered the defects a day after the child's
birth in a northern Iraqi hospital. More
Israel To Launch
Communications Satellite
Amos 2, an Israeli
communications satellite will join its predecessor in space
on December 25. The 1.4-ton satellite has already been fitted
to the Russian Soyuz and will be launched from Kazakhstan.
Amos 2, the second generation of communications satellites
built by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), will provide
communications services to television networks in Israel,
Europe and the United States. More
