Terrorism and
Prevention in Israel
Palestinian
terrorist kills two soldiers. On
Tuesday, a Palestinian gunman killed two Israel Defense Forces
soldiers standing at a checkpoint on the Tunnel Road that
links Jerusalem to Gush Etzion. One of the soldiers was talking
to his mother on a cellular phone when he was shot and killed.
The terrorist was armed with a Kalashnikov automatic rifle
hidden in a rolled-up prayer mat; he walked to the checkpoint,
hid behind nearby bushes, and opened fire at the soldiers.
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said that despite the
three and a half weeks of apparent quiet, there are over 40
warnings per day of impending attacks. More

Israel Condemns
Terrorist Attacks in Turkey
The Government of Israel
sent condolences to the families of those murdered in the
suicide bombings at two synagogues in Istanbul, Turkey on
Saturday, in which 24 people were killed. Israeli Foreign
Minister Silvan Shalom visited Turkey on Sunday in order to
meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and Jewish
community leaders, and to visit the two synagogues that were
bombed. Foreign
Minister Shalom stated that the two attacks must be seen within
the context of recent anti-Semitic and anti-Israel incitement
in the Arab world and remarks heard in European cities in
recent months. The Government of Israel once again sent
condolences five days later when another series of terrorist
attacks struck Turkey, this time at the British Consulate,
the British HSBC Bank, and a shopping center. The British
Consul General was among the 26 people killed. Over
700 people were injured in the combined attacks. More

Israel and Austria
End Four-Year Rift
The Israeli and Austrian
Foreign Ministers met in Vienna on Wednesday to rebuild the
relationship between the two countries. Israel withdrew
its ambassador to Vienna in 1999 after the Austrian government
formed a coalition with a right-wing party, whose leaders
were involved with local anti-Semitic elements. Israeli
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said that the Israeli government
was convinced that the Austrian leadership is committed to
fighting anti-Semitism, and he declared that Israel was ready
to work closely with Austria. Foreign Minister Shalom's
visit was the first by an Israeli foreign minister since 1999.
